Lasiodora parahybana Brazil – the state of Paraíba in the north-east of the country. Lasiodora parahybana is one of the largest tarantulas in the world – adult females can reach over 10 cm in body length, and their leg span exceeds 25 cm. It is a massive, powerful creature with a dark brown body covered in long, salmon-pink hairs, which have earned it the English name ‘Salmon Pink Birdeater’. In full light, it looks as though it is covered in pink fur – the effect is unmistakable. Despite its impressive size, it is surprisingly gentle and calm. It has a huge appetite and grows very quickly – young specimens can double their weight within a few months. It is a tarantula whose growth can almost be observed with the naked eye. It can produce stinging hairs, but is not aggressive. Adult females are gentle giants. It requires more space in the terrarium – adult females need a container with a base area of at least 40x30 cm. A 5–8 cm layer of coconut peat substrate, a sturdy hiding place, and a large water dish. Moderate humidity – regular misting. Room temperature. Feed generously and frequently, in proportion to its growth rate. Lasiodora parahybana is the ideal tarantula for the keeper who wants a giant – without the giant problems. A gentle temperament, rapid growth, easy to keep and spectacular in size. If you want a tarantula that impresses every visitor – the parahybana is the answer. I’m open to swapping for isopods
